Mark Twain once said, “The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.” Sadly, Mark, the exaggeration legacy lives on, at least in science, and it has now become an epidemic.
The very core of medicine is crumbling, and I am smiling, because following closely behind this failed system may come a kinder and gentler healthcare system. I’m not particularly smiling for those who fail to acknowledge how important it is to take good care of their health, because they may continue to require our current mediocre medical system, procedures and pills. To that end, ignorant patients are absolute gold to the very system that now questions their own procedures and pills. To those of you whom I meet at every lecture throughout the USA, congratulations! You have taken back the responsibility of your health and your ship has come in.
As many of you know, I have been very outspoken on television and radio (have you been watching our internet webcasts?) about early cancer screening tests like mammograms and PSA tests. These procedures lead to procedures or medications in lieu of knowing the cause of the abnormality. That just never made sense to me. Shutting off pain because you don’t know the cause of it is like pulling the red light out of your dashboard when you’re low on oil. For a few miles you’re going to be fine. Eventually the inevitable happens. An understanding of the importance of simply adding oil could have prevented the dead engine. The same is true with regards to your health. An understanding of the importance of the antifungal approach, exercise and proper diet, I remain absolutely convinced, might prevent much illness and death. But it can also prevent the use of medications and sometimes-unnecessary procedures. How safe are these, really?
I stood by in amazement in 2002 as the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) was abruptly terminated. Researchers who were carefully watching 16,000 women who were taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) suddenly discovered that this “therapy” was increasing the incidence of coronary disease, stroke and blood clots in the women taking them. As women rightfully stopped taking HRT, the incidence of breast cancer also declined. Damage caused by medication should not be news to us anymore. But beyond this news comes more damaging evidence that our goal of detecting cancer early had a dark side, as I have warned you many times. I don’t believe that healthy individuals have any place in doctors’ offices. For the record, if you eat the Standard American Diet (SAD), are sedentary and thrive on stress and chaos, I’d maintain those doctor visits regularly. However, if you’re educating yourself and changing or have changed, read on, because this gets interesting!
Published in the Journal of The American Medical Association (JAMA), three researchers discovered that my many years of shouting “WAKE UP AMERICA” were not in vain, but only if you woke up! Thankfully many, many women apprised me that they had. These researchers have discovered that the benefits (promoted by most all medical and breast and prostate cancer organizations) of mammograms and prostate exams have been greatly over estimated. As a matter of fact, Dr. Otis Brawley, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society (ACS) says this about prostate and breast cancer screening; “…I’m admitting that American medicine has over promised when it comes to screening. The advantages to screening have been exaggerated.” Exaggerated by whom, Dr. Brawley, and for what purpose? It just can’t be that we’ve placed medical corporate profits over patients…can it?
As you already know, I’m different. I have no idea what led Brawley and his thousands of peers to conclude that shooting radiation through breast tissue was good science in the first place, but the radiation story does not end here. Dr. Fred Mettler Jr., S. S. Representative to the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation, has just told us that Americans’ exposure to harmful radiation from medical procedures has exploded (appropriate wording, in my opinion) over the past few decades, to six times the level of 1980. From dental X-Rays to chest X-rays to mammograms, Mettler goes on to say that the last time radiation exposure studies were conducted in America was in 1980-82. Why? My guess would be that this blatant 30-year time void occurred because they’re making so much money…who cared? We have a 2 trillion dollar capitalistic healthcare system currently that wants nothing more than to become a 4 trillion dollar healthcare system, and we’re going right along with it. If it were working, I’d be all for it, but according to their testimonies, it is failing us. Just a political note here, but adding government to the equation, in my opinion, is rarely the answer. By allowing the proverbial fox (our current healthcare system) to guard the henhouse (our health), I see these stark admissions as only the beginning.
I am constantly telling my audience that medically speaking, I feel as though we are often on our own and without sound medical guidance, for the most part. We finally have proof of that. There are many sound and honest medical people, but their biased educational process has always scared me, but they are beginning to see the truth. To make matters worse, what network news anchor wants to openly question diseases like bird and pig flu when the very company that purportedly has “the cure” writes their paycheck? So what are we to do? I’m glad you asked!
The second you find yourself up at 6 a.m. jogging 3 miles, juicing organic vegetables, eating mostly fresh foods at home rather than eating in restaurants and learning everything you can to maintain good health, an amazing thing happens; you are set free from worry. Try it for a year and see if you don’t agree! Fewer doctor visits mean fewer screening procedures and fewer medications.
I have all of you to thank for our success in 2009! Bless You-it has been an honor to serve you!
