Our first Christmas, John (all of you know him from the show) and I rented a cabin in the woods for our first holiday together.  We were away from civilization all by ourselves and blissfully happy.  I cooked my very first turkey which turned out just like the one on National Lampoon’s “Christmas Vacation”!  You know the one that explodes when you put a fork in it.  The bird was nearly inedible, but we laughed because, as I said, we were blissfully happy.

I can remember the day like it was yesterday, the phone call that rocked my world. The call was from my father and it was to tell me that he had been diagnosed with cancer, a disease I was all too familiar with.

I lived with the idea of cancer because I had already lost both of my grandfathers to the disease. They were strong men. Men that, as a young boy, I thought walked on water. Watching them both succumb to this deadly disease is something that still brings back painful memories.

No one has any doubt that the healthcare system in America is broken. It works for a few wealthy medical entrepreneurs and leaves the rest of the country scrambling to pay bills or worried about insurance costs. I want to step away from the healthcare crisis and talk about the health crisis - something very few people seem to be discussing in the midst of this reform movement.

Growing up in Holyoke, Massachusetts, so close to ‘The Cradle of Liberty’ and other places, where so many historic events took place, gave me a bit of an advantage as far as appreciating the true meaning of the 4th of July from a fairly young age. I always looked forward to the day, maybe even more than some of the other big holidays we all celebrate, and especially knowing that it was declared a legal holiday in 1941, the year that I was born.
