The holiday season has finally ended and a brand new year lies ahead. January has always been a time for new resolutions and hopes for the future. So it may come as a surprise to you that I would choose to discuss such a worrisome topic as cancer. Cancer, there isn't a single person reading this who hasn't had a family member or close friend diagnosed with cancer and the numbers are growing. Like the patient in this month's case study, these individuals with a diagnosis of cancer will have to make serious decisions about treatment. Traditional medicine gives us few pleasant options: surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or a combination of the above. So before I go any farther, I must give this disclaimer: This case study is for information purposes only. I am using it to show you how a typical patient presents and the important things I consider when I make a diagnosis. The patient's name has been changed to protect her identity. I practice integrative/alternative medicine and my recommendations for treatment are often considered outside traditional practice. It is not my intent to criticize or denounce traditional medicine. I am merely providing an alternative opinion. Most importantly, the information provided here should not be used as a substitute for an examination and/ or treatment by a licensed health care provider.

While I love the "clean slate" of a new year, I've grown weary of "New Year's Resolutions." The word "resolution" should almost be re-defined to mean, "Something you decide to do at the beginning of each year that you never actually do."

I think that people set New Year's resolutions the way they sometimes go through a cafeteria line. They see so many things they'd like to have that their eyes become larger than their abilities to pull it off!

This year, let's all try doing it differently.

Happy New Year! We all know this is the time of year where we make promises for a change and then feel guilty that we are failing half-way through the year. It doesn't have to be that way THIS year! Many of us start a diet program then jump off the wagon because we feel restricted. Get creative with your diet; use some of your favorite herbs to give you different tastes. I haven't found a diet that restricts herbs and remember herbs are anti-fungal. Some of my personal favorites are Garlic, Rosemary, Thyme and Oregano.

Some of you may not be fully ready to take on a full-blown diet but are willing to make small changes. Here are some things you can do:

CANCER STATISTICS 101:
WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, BLAME THE PATIENT

By Doug A. Kaufmann

You know me. I believe that cancer is caused by fungus. All but a handful of physicians wholeheartedly disagree with my belief, but the truth will eventually surface as the mystery of cancer unravels.

For the disbelievers, everything from moon dust to meat has been implicated as the cause of cancer and, while cancer experts highly recommend eating "wholesome" foods like corn and peanuts in an effort to prevent this devastating disease, I say avoiding them prevents cancer. About 560,000 Americans die annually of cancer, so it just can't be moon dust or meat, otherwise we'd all be dead! It was recently announced that breast cancer incidents and death rate is decreasing. Of course, every newspaper in the country wrote about this and rotator cuffs were torn as cancer experts twisted to pat themselves on the back. Then it was revealed that the reason breast cancer rates declined was because women stopped following their physicians' advice. Yes, tens of thousands of women stopped taking their prescribed hormone replacement therapy (HRT) after research showed that it actually caused significant and deadly health problems, including cancer. The very experts who were recuperating from rotator cuff surgery were now being identified as "the cause!" Maybe it wasn't meat after all.
