Our case study this month could be anyone’s child.  Ms. November is the perfect example of the state of medical care for her generation.  This month’s case study is about a young and talented young woman who has received the best medical care that traditional medicine has to offer. Unfortunately, she is now dealing with the consequences of that treatment. With that said, let’s begin.

For those of you who miss my patient case studies, forgive me.  I will be back to my regular format next month  This information is too important and, for some people, it may be lifesaving.  In last month’s article, we discussed the H1N1 vaccine, its safety profile (or lack thereof), the possibility of mandatory vaccination and some of the things you could do to optimize your immune system.  It has been a very turbulent month considering the controversy over healthcare and the continuing recession.  I don’t think it is an overstatement to say that people are frightened about government spending, rising unemployment and fears of a “pandemic.”  It’s time for a little empowerment. Let’s continue our discussion on the H1N1 vaccine.

Dear Readers,

September has always signaled the end of summer vacation and the beginning of a new school year. In Michigan, where I grew up, the school year always began the week after Labor Day. (It also corresponded with the new fall lineup of shows on TV, three channels, no such thing as cable). As a physician, I am aware of the seasonal trends of illness. Within a few weeks of the start of the new school year, I could always count on the increase in sore throats, coughs and colds. When you put a large group of people (children) in close contact with one another, a lot of germs get spread around. And that brings me to the topic I would like to discuss, the H1N1 virus more commonly known as the “swine flu virus.” This article was prompted by an evening web seminar that was presented by Dr. Sherri Tenpenny a few weeks ago. The information was startling. I decided that this information needed to be passed on.

Life is full of surprises.  I had almost completed my article for this month’s newsletter when Doug’s office emailed me and said the topic this month would be diabetes.  “No problem,” I said to myself. “I can use this case study next month and I will get my article in on time for once.” So I started on a second article and was two-thirds done when Mr. August came into the office. “This is the case I have to write about it.”  So, I put aside Case study #2 for another month and started Case study #3.   Let’s get started before I change my mind again.

July is the month we celebrate our independence. I would ask everyone to stop for a few minutes and reflect upon the sacrifices that have been made by our military personnel and their families, both past and present. Through their efforts, we live in the greatest country in the world. We need to remember this, in spite of all the “bad press,” bankruptcies and bail-outs. Ask yourself, why do so many people continue to come to our country, legally and illegally, risking their lives and leaving their homes? We are blessed.

I’ll step off my soapbox to present this month’s case study. The patient I will be presenting this month is also one of our unsung heroes. She is a teacher. With that said, let’s get started.
